Argentinian girl

Argentinian girl everything is sunshine in your world
The dream is you and the flowers smell sweet when you're passing
You're happy to be, so beautiful to see
Argentinian girl, tango slowly with me.

You move so slow neath the shady trees on the sidewalk
And every eye watches you when you're passing
And all that you are, is what you will always be
Argentinian girl you're a rose in a graveyard.

Chorus

And did you fight when they took your daddy away
And is it right that he never came back to his family
You're living a lie, and no lie is sweet
Argentinian girl life is hard on the street.

Chorus

The night is cool and I stand and watch you dancing slowly
The music dies but your body is moving with passion
A man with a gun, will shatter all your dreams
And leave you tears and the gentle music softly playing.

Chorus

I spent ten days in Buenos Aires working in a TV studio. I didn't have much to do, and one day I was given a driver and guide to take me round the city.

As soon as I arrived people told me that 'Argentinian girls are the most beautiful in the world!'. I didn't disagree.

The people were great - very like English people: resourceful, enterprising, laughing conversation. Many spoke english and talked to me, and the only comment about the Falklands war was about how they had been fooled by the generals.

That period of military rule still hovered in the background as a constant shadow, together with the fear that it could easily return. It hasn't of course, although they have many economic problems.

In my hotel there were free tango lessons. I took advantage of them, and enjoyed myself, but I can't honestly say that I learnt to dance the tango - it's a very complicated dance!
